Meet Kim Gorleski: Helping Students Reach for Success
We’re thrilled to introduce Kim Gorleski, a dedicated special education teacher at Hoosic Valley. Over the summer, Kim taught a group of middle school students in a local district’s Extended School Year program. Initially unsure about teaching during the summer months, she quickly embraced the experience. “These students didn’t want to attend school over the summer, so I took on the challenge of making it fun,” Kim shared. She incorporated physical activities, games, field trips, and even water days, turning summer school into an enjoyable learning adventure. “It was such a fun experience, and I’m actually looking forward to doing it again next summer!”
At Hoosic Valley, Kim’s role includes preparing seniors for life beyond high school. A highlight of her career has been encountering former students who share how they’re thriving thanks to the plans she helped them create. “When they tell me they’re living out the goals we worked on together, I’m reminded that I’m helping them be successful in life. Each time this happens, I feel incredibly proud,” she explained.
Kim’s teaching philosophy centers on meeting each student where they are. She tailors her approach to help them gain essential skills for high school and beyond. Kim’s mentor, Deirdre Tiernan, along with the supportive special education team, directors, secretaries, and teaching assistants, has been instrumental in her journey at Hoosic Valley.
Her message for others is simple yet powerful: “Success doesn’t come to you; you have to go and get it. If you put in the time and effort, you will be successful.” Kim believes in building connections with her students, planning her teaching at their level, and inspiring them to work hard to achieve their dreams.
