We are excited to feature Eric Manny, the School Resource Officer at Hoosic Valley, who has built strong and meaningful connections with the students and staff. One of the highlights for Eric has been attending prom in recent years, including the spring of 2024, where he was asked by several students to take pictures with them before the event. He has also been invited to numerous graduation parties, moments that make him feel like he’s made a difference in people’s lives.
Eric’s open-door policy in his office has allowed students and teachers to stop by to discuss various issues or challenges. “I’ve been able to give everyone an answer or suggestion for a solution, coming from a different perspective than usual,” he shared. These conversations have allowed him to make an impact on attitudes toward school and life, and he hopes his advice has helped students navigate difficult situations.
As Eric has gotten to know the students better over the years, he takes his role more seriously each day, viewing the school community as his family. One of his most meaningful experiences has been when small groups of students enjoyed their lunch in his office instead of the cafeteria. One student, in particular, who knew his family personally, sought him out often for support, seeing him as another father figure.
Eric’s message to the community is simple but powerful: “Life will throw a lot of ‘stuff’ at you. My hope is that I showed people other ways to deal with that stuff. There are always other ways to deal with things. The best way is usually the simplest way. Everything in life is simple, it’s usually people who make things complicated. But don’t always take the easy way out. Balance is the key.”
