We are thrilled to feature Mark Viggiano, a dedicated educator at Hoosic Valley who finds the most rewarding aspect of his job in the day-to-day interactions he has with students. Whether it’s discussing topics in class or building connections, Mark values these social opportunities and the chance to make a difference in his students’ lives.
One of the most meaningful parts of Mark’s role is when he helps students resolve conflicts, fix problems, or simply lends an ear. “It’s in those times when I feel I am having the most impact on their social and emotional development,” Mark shared. He believes that hearing advice from an adult with life experience can provide students with a new perspective. As a health educator, he finds it especially rewarding when students tell him they’ve made healthier choices because of his class. “Conversations like that are always rewarding because you feel like you are reaching students,” he added.
These experiences have shaped Mark’s approach to teaching, emphasizing the importance of building connections and relationships. “Students will remember how you made them feel when you see them in the hallways and in your class,” he explained. Mark also believes in modeling positive behaviors and interactions with faculty, parents, and students, as he sees education as a collaborative effort. “We are all in this together, so let’s make it the best experience we can for the students,” he said.
Mark credits many colleagues for their support throughout his years at Hoosic Valley, including administration, teachers, aides, assistants, and custodial staff. Their collective efforts have contributed significantly to his experience and success as an educator.
His message is profound: “Life is fleeting, so be kind, caring, and compassionate. Build other people up and define your life in terms of giving rather than taking.”
