We are excited to introduce our beloved librarian, Kathy Maggiacomo, who recently completed an impressive project at Hoosic Valley—the Elementary Library Inventory. Kathy scanned over 15,000 books and weeded out more than 4,500 old or damaged books. “I feel happy that all the beautiful books are more visible now, and I hope this inspires more children to read,” she shared. The library looks refreshed, and Kathy hopes the change will encourage students to discover new books that were previously hidden behind older ones.
One of the most meaningful aspects of Kathy’s role is the time she gets to spend listening to students. “Every student has a story to share, and I love that my position offers me the time to listen to them,” she said. Whether students share their hopes and dreams or talk about a favorite book, Kathy values these conversations and the connections they build. She believes that truly hearing students, especially when it involves their favorite stories, is one of the most impactful things she can do.
Kathy’s experience in listening to students has shaped her approach to education. “I have always valued academics, but I believe that steering students toward books that support their interests and just being there for them creates an environment that enhances their education,” she explained.
Kathy is also impressed by the Masterminds team, a group of students she finds not only skilled but also kind and thoughtful towards each other and others.
Her message is inspirational: “Look for the best in people, and you will more likely find it!”
