Spotlight on Bridget Chapko: Champion of Change and Joy at HVCSD

At Hoosic Valley, we take immense pride in our veteran educators who continuously inspire and lead by example. Bridget Chapko, a dedicated 2nd grade teacher, stands out as a beacon of innovation and enthusiasm in our community.

Bridget recently led a highly successful Pick a Reading Partner (PARP) program that has brought together students, teachers, and community members in a collective effort to foster a love for reading. Reflecting on this achievement, Bridget expresses, “I am really proud of our school and our community for embracing the PARP program with such enthusiasm. It’s a testament to our collective commitment to our students’ success.”

A pivotal moment in Bridget’s career came when she was asked to pilot the Responsive Classroom approach. Initially hesitant, Bridget found invaluable support and guidance from her mentor, Sandy Fancher, and a close-knit group of peers who were also part of the pilot program. This experience profoundly transformed her teaching style and her view of student behavior. “It brought back the joy of teaching and offered a fresh perspective on children’s behaviors,” she recounts.

The support and camaraderie of the original Responsive Classroom group were instrumental in this journey. They provided a network of encouragement and shared learning that proved crucial for Bridget and her colleagues. This approach has not only rejuvenated Bridget’s passion for teaching but also enabled her to connect with some of the most challenging students, creating lasting impacts that extend far beyond the classroom walls.

Bridget hopes her story will inspire others in the educational community to embrace new challenges, step out of their comfort zones, and always remember the fundamental reason they became educators—to make a difference in children’s lives. “My hope is that we all continue to try new things, take care of ourselves, and bring back the joy in teaching,” she emphasizes.

Bridget Chapko’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact that passionate and dedicated teachers have on their students and the broader school community. Her commitment to growth and well-being at Hoosic Valley continues to inspire students and teachers alike.
