We are thrilled to introduce Ben Pelton, a passionate Special Education teacher at Hoosic Valley Jr./Sr. High. Ben recently achieved a major milestone, completing his master’s degree in Special Education over the summer.
Before becoming a teacher, Ben worked as a teacher’s assistant in a self-contained classroom for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Some of the students were non-verbal, and Ben found it both challenging and rewarding to contribute to their progress in communicating and expressing emotions in different ways. “It was a challenge, but very rewarding and meaningful,” he shared.
This experience shaped Ben’s approach to teaching, instilling in him the belief that every student learns best in their own unique way. “Being willing to be flexible and creative in the classroom creates a more welcoming environment for our students,” he added.
Starting at Hoosic Valley in the middle of the school year could have been overwhelming, but Ben credits his colleagues and students for making the transition smooth. He expressed gratitude for his co-teachers, Ms. Przybylo and Mr. Mullen, as well as the entire special education department, for their support and assistance. “The students have also been very welcoming and always make this such a fun place to work,” Ben said.
Ben’s message is simple but powerful: “Working in a small community is a great opportunity to get to know many of our students and help them learn to the best of their abilities.”
